NomadHomeIP™ Setup Guide

Welcome to Nomad Home IP™

This guide provides setup instructions for Nomad Home IP hardware bundles, hardware bundles with FailSafe, and standalone cloud VPS services.

Select the setup that matches your purchase below.

Choose your setup

Home Base Setup

Your Nomad Home Base and Travel Router are professionally configured, paired, and tested before shipment.

Step 1

Locate the Home Base Router, power adapter, and Ethernet cable included with your package.

Step 2

Connect the Home Base Router WAN/Internet port to your existing ISP modem or ISP router using the included Ethernet cable.

Examples:

  • AT&T Fiber
  • Xfinity
  • Spectrum
  • Frontier
  • Starlink
  • Other ISP equipment

Step 3

Connect power to the Home Base Router.

Step 4

Allow approximately 2–5 minutes for the router to boot and reconnect to your secure Nomad Home IP private network.

Step 5

Verify that Internet access is active on the Home Base Router.

Home Base installation is now complete.

No laptop configuration, manual VPN setup, port forwarding, command-line configuration, or additional technical setup is normally required.

Travel Router Setup

Your Travel Router is professionally configured and paired with your Home Base before shipment.

When traveling, the Travel Router can connect to hotel Wi-Fi, Airbnb Wi-Fi, mobile hotspots, Ethernet connections, or other available Internet services.

Step 1

Power on the Travel Router.

Step 2

Connect the Travel Router to the available Internet service.

Examples:

• Hotel Wi-Fi
• Airbnb Wi-Fi
• Friend or Family Wi-Fi
• Mobile Hotspot
• Ethernet Connection

Step 3

Connect your laptop, phone, tablet, streaming device, or other equipment to the Travel Router Wi-Fi network.

Step 4

Allow approximately 1–2 minutes for the secure connection to establish.

Step 5

Begin using the Internet normally.

Once the secure connection is established, devices connected through your Travel Router are configured to route Internet traffic through your Home Base connection.

No manual Tailscale configuration is required on the Travel Router during normal use.

Your Nomad Home IP™ Private Network

In addition to your preconfigured Home Base and Travel Router, you will receive a secure invitation from Tailscale at the email address associated with your Nomad Home IP order.

Your routers will operate without accepting this invitation. The invitation provides you with personal access to your private Tailscale network so you can add supported phones, tablets, and computers if desired.

To join your private network:

  1. Open the invitation email from Tailscale.
  2. Select the invitation link.
  3. Sign in using your own supported Tailscale identity.
  4. Accept the invitation to join your Nomad Home IP private network.
  5. Install or open the Tailscale app on any personal device you want to add.
  6. Sign in using the same identity that accepted the invitation.

Once joined, your supported personal devices can be added to the same private network as your Nomad Home IP equipment.

To route a personal device directly through your Home Base:

  1. Open the Tailscale app.
  2. Open Exit Nodes.
  3. Select your Nomad Home Base Router.
  4. Confirm that Tailscale shows the connection as active.

Your Internet traffic on that device will then route through your Home Base Internet connection until the exit node is disconnected.

Important: You do not need to provide Nomad Home IP with your personal Google, Microsoft, GitHub, Apple, or other account password. Your personal Tailscale access is authenticated separately from the managed provisioning used to configure your routers.

If the invitation opens under the wrong Tailscale account, open the invitation in an Incognito or Private browser window and sign in using the identity you want associated with your Nomad Home IP private network.

Optional Verification

If desired, visit:

https://www.myip.com

The Internet provider displayed should match the Internet Service Provider used by your Home Base.

For example, if your Home Base is connected to Spectrum in the United States while you are traveling internationally, the displayed public Internet connection should correspond to the Home Base connection rather than the local hotel, airport, or travel network.

🛡️ Nomad Home IP™ FailSafe Subscribers

For customers with a Nomad Home IP hardware bundle and the FailSafe Cloud Backup feature.

Your Home Base connection is your primary Internet route. If your Home Base loses Internet service or power, your preconfigured Nomad Home IP system automatically switches to your dedicated FailSafe cloud gateway.

When the Home Base connection becomes available again, the system automatically returns to the primary route.

No manual changes are required on your Travel Router for failover or recovery.

Using FailSafe on personal devices

You may also receive a separate secure device invitation from Tailscale at the email address used for your Nomad Home IP order.

This invitation provides access to your assigned FailSafe gateway directly from supported personal devices, including:

  • Windows computers
  • Mac computers
  • iPhone and iPad
  • Android devices

To use FailSafe directly on a personal device:

  1. Open the FailSafe invitation email from Tailscale.
  2. Select Accept device invite.
  3. Sign in using the identity associated with the invitation.
  4. Install or open the Tailscale app.
  5. Select your assigned Nomad Home IP FailSafe server under Exit Nodes.

Your FailSafe server remains owned, maintained, and supported by Nomad Home IP. You receive access only to the server assigned to your account.

Important: Accepting the FailSafe device invitation is optional for personal-device access. It is not required for the automatic router failover and failback functions to operate.

If the invitation opens under the wrong Tailscale account, open it in an Incognito or Private browser window and sign in using the identity associated with your Nomad Home IP order.

🖥️ Standalone Cloud VPS Subscribers

If you purchased a standalone Nomad Home IP cloud gateway without a physical router bundle, you can skip the Home Base and Travel Router instructions.

Your assigned gateway is accessed through the Tailscale app on your phone, tablet, or computer.

Step 1 — Accept your Tailscale invitation

When your gateway is ready, you will receive a secure device invitation directly from Tailscale at the email address used for your Nomad Home IP order.

  1. Open the invitation email.
  2. Select Accept device invite.
  3. Sign in using the identity associated with the invitation.

Your assigned gateway remains owned, managed, and supported by Nomad Home IP. You receive access only to the server assigned to your account.

If the invitation opens under the wrong Tailscale account, open the invitation in an Incognito or Private browser window and sign in using the identity associated with your order.

Step 2 — Install Tailscale

Download and install the Tailscale app on the device you want to use.

Supported devices include:

  • iPhone and iPad
  • Android phones and tablets
  • Windows computers
  • Mac computers

Step 3 — Sign in

Open Tailscale and sign in using the same identity that accepted the invitation.

Step 4 — Select your Nomad Home IP gateway

Open the Exit Nodes menu in Tailscale and select your assigned Nomad Home IP server.

The server name will look similar to NHIP-ICN-ARRAY-0032, with the region and service type matching your purchase.

After selecting it, your Internet traffic will route through the region associated with your purchased gateway.

Step 5 — Verify your connection

Visit MyIP.com and confirm that the displayed public location matches the region you purchased.

Important Application Note

Tailscale is required when using a standalone Nomad Home IP cloud gateway.

Most applications will work normally while connected. However, some applications may behave differently when using a VPN connection, including:

  • Banking and financial applications
  • Streaming services
  • Corporate VPN software
  • Location-based applications

This behavior is controlled by the application provider and not by Nomad Home IP.

If an application does not work as expected:

  1. Open Tailscale.
  2. Temporarily disconnect from the exit node.
  3. Reopen the application.
  4. Reconnect to your Nomad Home IP gateway when finished.
